Can Aframomum Melegueta Really Burn Fat
Aframomum Melegueta is starting to appear in many more fat burning products… its use until recent times has been limited to use as a rather pungent spice in cooking..
It belongs to the same plant family as Ginger and shares some of the medicinal benefits often associated with its sibling.
It appears to have some anti-obese and anti-diabetic properties although it is largely untested… there was one study involving humans that did demonstrate an ability to increase metabolism but this required the test subject to have both brown fat and also be exposed to the cold for it to have any effect.
It can also appear on supplement labels as:
- Grains Of Paradise
- Melegueta Pepper
- Alligator Pepper
- Guinea Pepper
- Guinea Grain
In its native Western Africa, it is often used in local medicines for treating Stomach Ache, Diarrhea as well as hypertension… there are also reports of it helping to treat snakebites and scorpion stings.
It has also been claimed to have aphrodisiac properties but these have been largely untested and remain unconfirmed
Doses of up to 120mg/kg of body weight have shown no adverse reactions when tested on Rats.. larger doses up to 450mg/kg did show increased liver mass without causing complications.
A rare study on humans did demonstrate that a 350mg dose of Aframomum Melegueta did cause diplopia and blurred vision in male test subjects.
Aframomum Melegueta As A Fat Burning ingredient
There is a distinct lack of testing looking at its fat burning abilities, the only reference is the aforementioned study that showed a positive effect in human test subjects with a high level of brown adipose fat when subjected to a cold environment – read study here –
Apart from this, there is no information generally available of any other testing on humans, and therefore we cannot be sure if this ingredient is (a) safe and (b) effective
We suggest that until more testing has been carried out and the results published that you avoid any supplements containing Aframomum Melegueta
